Baseline Your Life

The Steps · Chapter 4 · Premises 7–10

Go Fourth and Prosper

We live in four realms, body, heart, mind and soul, and each runs on a different mix of sensation and perception.

You have made it through the densest part. From here the Dynamics come down to earth and into your day. Out of sensation, perception and sensception come four realms of existence, and they appear in this order for a reason: each one depends on the one before it.

The seventh premise: the first and most important realm is the body. It is run mostly by sensation, especially early in life, with perception joining in later. Nothing else gets done if the body is not cared for.

The eighth premise: the next realm is the heart, our emotional life. It runs on sensception, roughly half sensation and half perception, which is why feelings can come from a hormone or from a thought.

The ninth premise: the third realm is the mind. It runs mostly on perception, with maybe five to ten percent sensation mixed in.

The tenth premise: there is a fourth realm, and the plainest word for it is the soul. If that word makes you bristle, stay with me, because here it has nothing to do with an afterlife or an eternal version of you. In Baseline Your Life, the soul is the totality of your life: your ability to reach into all of it and understand the legacy you are leaving for everyone else. Like the heart, it runs on sensception, half perception and half sensation.

Four realms, in order: body, heart, mind, soul. Each has its own needs, its own pitfalls and its own reward, and the rest of the book builds on them. The Four Realms page walks through each one in plain English, and the test asks how you are getting along in all four.
